LeDu (樂多食飲): A Colorful Bite of China in Munich Center

Located just minutes from the city’s main shopping streets, LeDu (樂多食飲) is one of those places you might walk past without noticing—but once you give it a try, you’ll realize that some of the most authentic, delicious food comes in unassuming packages.

LeDu is a Chinese casual dining chain specializing in dumplings, noodles, and wontons, with three locations across Munich and another in Bonn. The Stachus Passage branch, hidden inside the subway underground, is especially known for selling authentic Jianbing Guozi— the iconic Chinese pancake and a rare find in Germany.

The space itself is compact but functional: self-service, no air conditioning, no restroom, and no tipping required. But what it may lack in comfort, it more than makes up for with speed, value, and seriously tasty food.

We tried two of their most signature dishes.

🌈 Colorful Dumplings

These dumplings are as eye-catching as they are delicious. Each dumpling comes in a different natural hue, with colors derived from vegetable and spice ingredients – spinach green, paprika orange, beet red, and squid ink black – each color hides a different filling inside.

Green spinach skin bursts with the tangy kick of kimchi and melted cheese, sweetened by corn, offering a creamy, slightly sweet-spicy bite.

Another green dumpling is packed with soft glass noodles, crunchy carrots, and wood ear mushrooms.

The red one is deeply umami, with mushrooms and pork swimming in savory juices.

The black pack a peppery punch with seasoned beef and carrots.

The orange paprika wraps juicy chicken, mildly sweet and smoky.

The white dumpling is plump with shrimp, savory pork, and fresh green onions.

The plate is then crowned with steamed edamame and paired with optional house-made chili oil and vinegar.

In this dish, every bite is different —a confetti of bamboo shoots, cabbage, celery, peas, and tomatoes, spiced with ginger, Thai basil, spring onions, coriander, and hints of curry or chili.

It’s an explosion of freshness and flavor – perfect if you want variety without ordering ten different dishes.

🥞 Street Food King: Jianbing (煎饼果子)

LeDu’s Jianbing Guozi is cut in half for easy eating. The base is an incredibly thin, soft, and slightly elastic crepe made from multigrain batter, brushed with egg, and sprinkled with sesame seeds before being filled and folded.

Inside, you get crisp lettuce, a crunchy cracker (bao cui), and your choice of protein. We chose the Sichuan-style juicy minced pork, with the mouth-tingling flavor of Dan Dan Noodles—savory, deeply umami, with a slow-building heat and a hint of nuttiness.

You can also choose braised beef, grilled chicken, or tofu.

For sauce, the traditional choice for Tianjin-style Jianbing is sweet bean sauce (甜面酱) – a thick, glossy, fermented sauce that’s mildly sweet, salty, and savory with a complex, mellow richness. You can also amp it up with peanut or hot garlic sauce.

Each bite is full of contrasts: soft vs. crunchy, fresh vs. savory, mild crepe vs. bold filling—all in one glorious, portable package.

The authenticity here is palpable, especially in that jianbing – a “Han traditional staple” stretching back thousands of years (some believe it dates back to the Neolithic era, roughly 10,000 to 2,000 BCE, tied to the use of early clay griddles. Folk legends trace it to the Three Kingdoms period, from 220 to 280 CE, while historical records from the Eastern Jin dynasty, spanning 317 to 420 CE, mention the custom of eating jianbing on Tian Chuan Day to “repair the sky.”). Once a fuel for dock workers for its portability and satisfying nature, it’s shaped into modern street food icon with the same durable, nourishing spirit.

With very good prices and authentic flavors, LeDu is a great spot if you’re seeking a quick, tasty, and healthy bite.
