On our way back from the mythical Shangri-La, we made a stop in Lijiang, Yunnan Province – a place that feels like a vivid, poetic verse written in ancient ink.

Often described as the “Venice of the East,” Lijiang is one of those cities that instantly slows your heartbeat. Snow-capped mountains rise quietly in the distance, narrow stone alleys twist through centuries-old wooden houses, lanterns glow above trickling canals. Unlike the fast rhythm of big cities, life here moves gently.

We only had two full days, and while time was fleeting, we explored some of the city’s highlights. This guide combines our actual travel experience with online research, covering accommodation, transportation, must-visit attractions and food recommendations. Let us unlock the best rhythm to explore Lijiang. 🗝️
Accommodation & Transportation Tips
🏨 Where to Stay
We highly recommend staying near Sifang Street or Wuyi Street for convenience. These areas are ideal for food, transportation, nightlife, and easy access to the ancient town’s highlights. 🌃

If you’re traveling with elderly family members, children, or simply prefer quieter surroundings, the South Gate area or Qiyi Street are better choices.
🚫 Pro Tip: The ancient town is full of stone-paved roads, making it somewhat inconvenient to drag luggage around. Choosing a guesthouse with pickup service will save you a lot of trouble.
🚗 How to Get Around
Airport/Train Station: The dedicated scenic direct shuttle buses are your cheapest and easiest bet.
In the Old Town: Motor vehicles are prohibited, so expect to walk everywhere. Comfortable shoes are essential. 👟
Beyond the Town: Buses like the Route 101 (101路景区专线) are your best friend for reaching the mountains and lakes.

🗓️ Our 2-Day Lijiang Itinerary
Our itinerary mainly focuses on Lijiang Old Town and Black Dragon Pool Park. It’s great for travelers with limited time who still want to enjoy a slower, more relaxed experience in Lijiang. ✨

Day 1 — Lijiang Ancient Town (Lijiang Old Town / Dayan Old Town / 大研古城)
First Glimpse of Its Highlights:
🏯Mu’s Mansion (木府) – “Forbidden City of the South”

It’s one of the most impressive historical sites in Lijiang. Once owned by the powerful Mu Family, who ruled this region during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the palace shows grand traditional architecture, elegant courtyards, and the rich history of the Naxi people. Climbing higher within the palace complex gives you a panoramic view over the rooftops of the ancient town, with the mountains standing behind the city. 🏔️
🛍️ Zhongyi Market (忠义市场)

This is where the locals shop — from fresh fruits and local snacks to flowers, tea, spices, mushrooms, and souvenirs. Prices here are usually much cheaper than tourist main strips. That said, be careful when buying fruits, as prices and quality can vary a lot. 🍓
🌟Sifang Square (四方街)
As dusk hits, this becomes the center of gravity. When night falls, it turns into a massive dance floor – lanterns light up the square, music starts, and traditional bonfire dances begin! Join hands with the Naxi grandmas in their colorful costumes and jump into the Bonfire Party. The vibe is so festive🔥✨

🎡The Water Wheel (大水车)

Located at the entrance, this is the symbol of Lijiang. Go at blue hour (just after sunset) to watch the lights flicker while red lanterns sway above the cannels, creating one of the most photogenic scenes in the city.
🍜 Dinner: The Must-Try “Crossing the Bridge” Noodles (过桥米线)

This is a famous Yunnan dish that comes with a lovely story. Legend says a scholar was studying on a small island while his wife brought him meals every day by crossing a bridge. To keep the soup warm, she covered it with a layer of oil, accidentally discovering that the soup stayed piping hot much longer this way, so she could cook the fresh ingredients right before her husband ate the noodles. Eventually, the dish evolved into today’s “Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles.” ✨
Day 2 — Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭公园)
This spot is one of the most peaceful places in the city, offering the postcard-perfect view of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflecting in the crystal-clear lake, framed by ancient pagodas. You can do a light hike up the Elephant Hill, or just be lazy like us and wander the nearby ancient architecture before grabbing a hot pot meal.

🍲 Dinner: Lijiang’s Famous “Laba” Pork Rib Hot Pot

It’s a preserved pork rib hotpot that is rich, savory, smoky, and perfect for chilly mountain weather.
✨ The Extended Gems (If you have more time)
If you have a few extra days, these places are absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.
🎨 Baisha Ancient Town (白沙古镇)

Located beneath the snow mountain, this town is filled with unique cafés, handmade craft shops, and beautifully designed boutiques with very little repetition. It feels quieter, more artistic, and less crowded than the main ancient town.
🌿Shuhe Ancient Town (束河古镇)

Think of this as Lijiang 20 years ago. Compared to Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe Ancient Town is far less commercialized. The streets are calmer, shops feel more curated, and it’s easier to enjoy the town without constantly squeezing through crowds. Many travelers end up preferring Shuhe for this reason.
🏔️Yulong (Jade Dragon) Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山)
Distance: 1 hour bus ride from Lijiang Old Town (via Route 101 scenic bus).

The famous Glacier Park cableway brings visitors up to around 4,680 meters above sea level, where snowy peaks and dramatic mountain views stretch endlessly into the distance.

The altitude is no joke though — Lijiang itself already sits at around 2,400 meters above sea level, while the mountain is much higher, so it’s important to prepare oxygen bottles in advance if needed. ❄️
💎 Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷)
Distance: 40 minutes away from the ancient town on Bus 101 scenic line
The water glows in a dreamy Tiffany-blue color, so clear that the mountain reflections seem painted onto the lake. 🌊

💡 Pro Tips
The Golden Hour Magic: Mornings are for Black Dragon Pool (to catch the “Golden Mountain Sunrise”). Afternoons are for wandering the lanes.

Nights are for twinkling lights and live music in the Lijiang Ancient Town.

The True Soul of Lijiang: Leave the crowded paths behind. Wander into the tiny alleyways. Find a quiet riverside café. Sit beside flowing water doing absolutely nothing. Feel the slow, peaceful rhythm of the real Lijiang. ✨

⚠️ The Altitude: Lijiang sits at approximately 2,400 meters (7,874 feet). While rarely severe, you can feel breathless walking up stairs. If needed, you can easily buy oxygen bottles from local shops or street vending machines and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain area.
