The Real-Deal Mexican Street Food at Sonora in Frankfurt

We’ve always wanted to find a real, authentic Mexican spot in Frankfurt: not the heavy, melted-cheesy Tex-Mex style, but the real-deal Mexican street food: the juicy, charred meat, fresh cilantro, homemade salsas, and a kitchen run by Mexican cooks.

Well, we found it. It’s called Sonora.

Here’s what hit our table❤️

Chips & Guac

Not the guacamole that would punch you in the face with raw onion or too much lime, Sonora’s guac is mild, creamy, and almost milky – like an avocado smoothie. There’s a gentle, lemonade-sour touch. It’s soothing, fresh, and balanced.

Take a crunchy chip for a salty, perfect scoop.

Steak Tacos (Tacos de Carne Asada)

This is one of the most ordered dishes at Sonora. Two steak tacos loaded with salsa bandera (a fresh red, white, and green salsa named after the Mexican flag), guacamole cream, and pickled onions.

The steak is thin, beautifully charred on the edges, and tender inside. A little smoky, a little juicy. The beef is savory but not dominant – it plays nicely with the bright tomato salsa, the cilantro, and the tangy red onion.

The tortilla is thin, lightly crunchy, and not overpowering the filling. Every bite feels like fresh, spicy, juicy perfection.

Tacos de Birria

One of the most famous tacos in Mexico. Traditionally from Jalisco, birria is marinated pulled beef slow-cooked until it falls apart, swimming in its own rich, spiced juices.

At Sonora, they give you two generous tacos, topped with cilantro and onions. Pro move: Take some chips and guac, scatter them on top of the birria taco, squeeze a little lemon, and then take a bite.

That first bite. The beef is so savory it tastes like it’s been simmered for hours. The meat is substantial and has deep flavors – warm spices, a little smokiness, and a little earthy chili. Every bite releases a burst of beef juice – so juicy it almost feels like the taco itself is filled with beef broth.

Two Salsas on the Side

  • The Fiery Volcano Salsa: super spicy – bright red, aggressive, with a punch of chile de árbol. The heat builds slowly, then blooms on your tongue like a tiny volcano.
  • The Smoky Salsa: deep, smoky, and slightly roasted, with a darker red color. It’s spicy too, but gentler – more like a warm campfire than an explosion.

Hot tip: add two extra tacos with cheese and dip them into these salsas. The melted cheese softens the spice, the tortilla soaks up all the smokiness – it’s dangerously addictive.

Besides the above, Sonora also serves quesadillas, shrimp tacospulled pork, and even soja chorizo for plant-based diners. The menu is simple but tempting.

Sonora works for everything: long sitting, chatting over cold horchata– or just a quick, wallet-friendly bite when you’re hungry and want something delicious – it’s exactly the Mexican place Frankfurt needs.
